As she excitedly displays a new batch of stones with the pride of a geologist just back from a successful excavation, Neely explains that she selects and ties each stone on every bag herself. Although she has a team of sewers that do a magnificent job of turning her gorgeous hides of soft palomino and currant leather and stunning array of silk fabric into these finely constructed works of art, it is Neely who finds the perfect stone to compliment the unique color combinations of each bag. These stones that she uses as claps in lieu of manufactured plastic or metal pieces are the signature features of her line. Neely’s enthusiasm for these rocks is contagious, and soon I find myself fascinated by her poppy jaspers from Wyoming, leopard skin stones from South America, aventurines from Idaho, and unakites from South Africa. “Nothing in my line is machine-made. Everything comes straight from the earth — the materials, the organic shapes, even the name,” Mack explains. (Her current Rogue Collection is named after the rocks that she so carefully hunts down).
