Mangia, Mangia!
Where do Al Pacino and Robert Di Nero go when they are in New York City and want real Italian food? They head to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx's Little Italy and grab a seat at Mike's Deli. This Italian bistro, located inside the Arthur Ave. Retail Market, has been serving up an incredible assortment of imported cheeses, meats, homemade breads, sandwiches, and antipasti for over 45 years.
Since 1951, Mike's Deli and its brother company, Arthur Ave. Caterers, have wowed the taste buds of thousands of New Yorkers. Setting foot inside the deli, one is immediately overwhelmed by the dizzying array of mouth-watering sausages and mounds of specialty cheeses lining the counters. The air is filled with the aroma of fresh-baked lasagna, homemade focaccia, and aged sharp provolone. It truly is a food lover's paradise. One can hardly wait to taste the prosciutto di Parma or dig in to a sample of cacciatorini, a scrumptious garlic-infused sausage.
"Our motto is quality and quantity," states David Greco, the owner of Mike's Deli. "We offer the best service and price and give people the most for their money." This means that Greco only uses the freshest ingredients and will not use anything that is frozen. Everything is made to order. Greco refuses to take shortcuts and sacrifice taste or tradition. In fact, Mike's Deli is one of the few shops that still makes smoked mozzarella the old-fashioned way, without using any chemical additives.
High quality and tradition are staples at Mike's Deli. For years, Mike Greco ruled his restaurant with an iron fist. It was imperative that his customers receive only the best products and finest service. He has since passed these values along to his son, David, who remains adamant about offering customers the finest goods. "We want to stress that we're all about bringing our customers quality products and service," says Greco.
Whilst munching on mouthfuls of delightful dried sausage, it is hard to decide which amazing delectable to try next. It is readily apparent that one is not going to walk away from Mike's Deli empty-handed. In fact, it is a sure possibility that one will leave laden with imported olives, pasta, Mike’s own balsamic vinegar and olive oil, dried porcini mushrooms, and parmigiano reggiano, for it is impossible to select just one item.
With great effort, the food experts at Citystuff have managed to consume an abundance of Mike's phenomenal eats and select the best of the best for you. Unfortunately, we've yet to institute the scratch-and-sniff technology, so you'll have to imagine the pungent aromas of pasta and fresh focaccia wafting through the air. However, it will not be necessary to envision the incredible Italian fare at Mike's. We've brought it to you. All you have to do is select what you want, put it in your cart, and go check out. You’ll have a tasty, authentic Italian meal on your table in no time. |

Tiramisu
Scrumptious tiramisu!
Tirami-su, which literally translates to “pick me up”, was initially created in Siena, in the northwestern Italian province of Tuscany. In the 19th Century, Tiramisu became popular among the English intellectuals and artists who lived in Florence. Tiramisu eventually made its way to Treviso, just northwest of Venice, in the northeastern province of Veneto. Now, Treviso is best know for its canals, frescoes, and Tiramisu.
The original recipe called for custard and only recently has Mascarpone cheese been substituted. The basic ingredients are eggs, Mascarpone cheese (a triple creme cheese), ladyfingers, cream, espresso coffee, liquor – such as brandy, marsala, or rum – sugar, and cocoa or shaved chocolate.

Panettone
Is it a bread or a cake?
Panettone is a traditional Italian sweet bread, served especially at holidays. Said to have been fashioned by a humble baker's apprentice to impress a prospective marriage partner, Panettone is a specialty of Milan. Filled with raisins and nuts, Panettone is a cross between bread and a cake.
Traditionally, this bread is served on Christmas Eve, Venetian style, with the tall loaf scooped out and filled with vanilla ice cream. It’s served with a hot bittersweet chocolate sauce and cups of chamomile tea.
Of course, Panettone is just as good any other day of the year, and day-old Panettone makes a sublime main ingredient in your favorite bread pudding recipe.

Parmigiano Reggiano

Sprinkle a little over your favorite pasta dish today!
Most gourmet chefs consider Parmigiano Reggiano to be the only cheese worthy of ordaining pasta dishes. This delectable cheese has its origins in Northern Italy, or more precisely, in the areas around Parma and Reggio Emilia. What’s more, it is still made according to ancient traditional craftsmanship methods that have stood the test of time.
Parmigiano Reggiano is called "the great cheese of eight centuries" because the ancient formula has remained unchanged for 800 years. Today's cheese is the same as the one enjoyed by armored knights, bonded serfs, gentlemen, and ladies.
Records dating back to 1200-1300 AD describe the characteristics of Parmigiano Reggiano; characteristics that remain the same to this very day. Its natural preservative-free ingredients produce a wonderful, crumbly, grainy crystal-like texture, which is not cut but wedged open. Together with its long aging process (at least twelve months), digestibility, and aroma, it is the ideal cheese for a healthy diet.
