A gothic tower in the middle of the city. The Chicago Water Tower has been the city's most cherished landmark for over a century. This structure was designed in 1867 by architect William W. Boyington. It stands today as a memorial to the victims of the Great Chicago Fire. Constructed of Joliet limestone blocks quarried in Illinois, the Water Tower was one of the only buildings left standing after flames engulfed the city of Chicago on the morning of October 9, 1871. On the day following the fire, the Water Tower served as a guidepost by which citizens hunted through the ruins for what had once been their homes.
