Where Everybody Knows Your Name The Bull & Finch Pub's rise to stardom is a classic "Hollywood" story - Beantown style. Three producers, Jim Burrows and Glen and Les Charles were looking to create a new sitcom based on an American neighborhood bar, where people come to live out their lives. One producer suggested going to Boston, where sports and politics are hot issues at the local watering holes. One afternoon during their search, the producers dropped into the Bull & Finch (partly because of its name, partly because of its Beacon Hill location), where they met the affable bartender, Eddie Doyle. After a beer, burger, and chat with Eddie, they felt good about the Bull & Finch. They visited half a dozen other Boston bars, then returned to the Pub, declaring "This is the place!" After they took a few hundred pictures and gave them to a set designer, they filmed a pilot and sold the show, which they named "Cheers," to NBC. The rest, as they say, is history. The show premiered on September 30, 1982, and became one of the top-rated shows in TV history. All of the actors have been to the Bull & Finch Pub, either for filming or stopping by informally when they visit Boston. The Pub itself was created in 1969 by a Canadian architect built in England and transported to Boston, where it was carefully reconstructed piece by piece. Once you've spent some time in the Bull & Finch Pub, you too will experience what those Hollywood producers felt back in '82.
