The Original Sourdough Bakery
San Francisco, 1849. The rush was on. A sleepy outpost turned into a brawling boomtown. Ships flooded the harbor and miners paced the water’s edge, but it wasn't just gold they were after. They craved a taste of Boudin Original San Francisco French Bread.
Inside a tiny, old-world bakery on Dupont Street, a French baker named Isadore Boudin kneaded a special dough and then formed it into the shape of a traditional French loaf. The result was a delicious, tangy bread with a chewy, golden crust colored in a reddish hue. Each sourdough loaf is all natural and contains no added fat or preservatives of any kind.
At Boudin Bakery, that tradition continues today. Our Boudin sourdough French bread is still made with unbleached flour, pure water, salt, and a portion of the original "mother dough" that dates back to the first loaf. In fact, if you were a Boudin Bakery customer in the early 1900's, your bread was probably delivered to your door by horse-drawn wagon. If you were not home, your freshly baked loaf would be left hanging on a nail by your front door.
How your Boudin Sourdough French Bread is delivered to you may have changed, but the recipe is the same. It has remained an unchanged tradition for over 150 years -- a true San Francisco original. |
